you say artsy like it is a *bad* thing ;)

i like projects. anyone who is even mildy acquainted with me knows that without a project i am a bit of a wandering soul. true story. lately it has been a compilation of smaller projects (id badges for my office girls, paper flower bouquet for a friend in the hospital, fancy cakes, valentines gifts, cornhole game boards, etc). with that being said... i have been scouring the internet and pinterest for my next project when it became clear what my project should be: grandma's furniture. now you may laugh and say, don't be insulting and call it grandma furniture. however, it really was my grandma's furniture until she had her house redecorated and they were passed down to my parents who then bought their own furniture and these beauties were bequeathed to me and my brother. needless to say their travels are extensive: chicago to jacksonville to ft myers to orlando to ormond beach. i have been itching to reupholster them, but have realized that perhaps reupholstering them right now is not the fiscally, nor the "project that matches my talent"-responsible choice. so! new plan: paint them. i saw this idea originally on a blog i found (Painted Upholstery Project) when i was looking for kitchen ideas for a house i do not own (lol), and quickly realized i can absolutely (and by absolutely i mean hopefully) do this. game on. i will post the entire project once i am finished with it (good or bad...i figure if it is a disaster, i simply get a slip cover or fork out the cash for a professional upholstery job). for now, here are the "before" pictures so you can see their "potential". i honestly love the pattern, just not the color. i'm over blue. i have grand plans that involve a shade of purple, but i want to keep the integrity of the flower pattern so that they can still show through after the paint is applied. if these chairs go well and are successfully painted without transforming them into plastic-y, sticky, pseudo-vinyl textures my next project will be the ginormous couches my friends affectionately termed "grandma's couches". anyhow! here are the before photos (the blue is a bit darker because i just finished RugDoctor vacuuming them in preparation for the painting project). i'm very excited about this and hope this project does not bring me to tears :) stay tuned! below is an assortment of a few of my recent projects...

be a light...

I believe in right and wrong. There is no grey area for me… I have come to realize that for most others this is not the way they view things and my perception is often too strict. That is fine. I accept that I am judgmental. Not accept in a passive, complacent manner, but in an “I’m working on it” manner. My struggle lies with the fact that I believe my extraordinarily judgmental, critical, perfectionist tendencies are what have brought me to this amazing, rewarding stage of my life. For that, I am not the least bit apologetic. However, the strict standards I hold myself and others to do not cause me to berate, ridicule, or patronize individuals who fall short of achieving those expectations. I have realized that we are all on journeys. Some people are simply further along in their journey than others. That is what makes life so intriguing, stimulating, and frustrating all at the same time! It is an intricate web of interactions; every day we come in contact with people who are ...

and four months later...

four months ago was demo work (well, August 4th to be exact)... then it was a major mold problem... then Ollie became incredibly ill, we thought we were going to lose him, and I was caravanning from my parents' house to work (read: two hours round trip) every day. however, four months later, a diagnosis and recovery from Pemphigus for Ollie, flooring down, new ceilings, updated electric, and lots of quality time with my parents, i am ALMOST done. big things have happened and between commuting, crazy long hours at work, too-frequent vet specialist appointments, and travel for work and holidays -- i present: PROGRESS!  --- let's take a step back and remember what we *used* to see in my kitchen --- --- and after cabinets and counters installed --- antique leather granite, oooooh.  so, we have not quite finishing toe kicks or baseboards, but door trim, handles, pulls, appliances (read: the first time this house as ever had a dishwasher, EVER) ins...

furniture update

ok... so when the chick from the blog i got my inspiration from said that the first coat was scary she was not lying. the current shade of pink my chair has become is HORRIFYING. sometime during the application of paint to cushion number one i realized how terrifying the color was and was thrown into an uncontrollable fit of giggling which then led to crying. the chair is so ugly it is fugly. no bueno, people. the pink is a shade of pink i could not have even attempted to imagine. as it dries i believe the pink is becoming more magenta (which is, in fact, the shade i am trying to achieve in the longrun). they say this first coat is simply the primer coat and the next layer will be the beginning of the color taking shape. let's hope so. if there are furniture gods, i am praying to them tonight because this has me more than a little concerned that my final result will be 1. unpublishable and 2. an expensive trip to an upholsterer. i'm posting a pic so that if someone else wants t...
